Our guest Weather Brain tonight is Jeff Rosenfeld. As editor-in-chief of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, Rosenfeld will be responsible for story ideas, leads, and structuring the overall content of the Bulletin, which will be transformed into a new publication intended to better serve AMS members and the community at large.
Rosenfeld brings to the job tremendous expertise in writing, editing, and publishing-particularly in the field of weather. He previously was the managing editor of Weatherwise, the award-winning popular magazine about weather published by Heldref Publications in Washington, DC. In all, he was an editor of Weatherwise for nearly 15 years.
Though he has written about numerous scientific topics, including earthquake engineering and zoology, Rosenfeld has maintained his focus as a writer on meteorology. He authored the book, Eye of the Storm: Inside the World’s Deadliest Hurricanes, Tornadoes, and Blizzards (Plenum Press, 1999), a history of our understanding of storms that spotlights recent meteorological progress. He’s also contributed to other popular books on the atmosphere, including Weather, a guidebook published by the Discovery Channel, and Restless Earth, published by the National Geographic Society. In addition, Rosenfeld has written numerous articles on weather for publications such as Scientific American Presents and Frontiers, the National Science Foundation newsletter.
A graduate of Princeton University, Rosenfeld’s work in weather journalism has earned him several Distinguished Achievement Awards from the Educational Press Association of America. He has also taught magazine publishing for the continuing education program in journalism at George Washington University in Washington, DC.
