Our guest this week comes from the ranks of the Science and Operations Officer (SOO) position. This training position is at every NWS office, but the SOO for this episode comes from the Paducah, KY, NWS office. Patrick Spoden got his degree at Northern Illinois University in 1986 and served as one of the instructors for the NWS for the WSR-88D program. Pat talks about the Evansville Tornado a few years ago as well as winter weather including an ice storm that reshaped the way they think about dealing with severe winter weather.

Our mail bag has been full this week. Moisture sparkling in the air was one question. Plus some other notes.

From The Weather Center:

WeatherBrains 101: Did you know that some snowflakes are triangular? The existence of such snowflakes has been known for a long time, but it has remained a mystery as to why. A new study is about to be published that proposes an explanation for the oddball flakes.

TWIWH: Bill Murray looks back at the week of December 9th which included a major tornado in Tuscaloosa, AL, in 2000.

Listener SurveyListener Surveys: Okay, we continue to drive this topic into the ground, but we really do like to hear from you. Many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to fill out the Listener Survey. The survey takes just a minute or two to complete and provides us with an opportunity to learn where you are and hear your thoughts and comments on the show. Click here to take the survey.
