Dr. Thomas SchmidlinOur special guest for Episode 182 is Dr. Thomas Schmidlin, chair of the Geography Department of Kent State University, Kent, OH. Dr. Schmidlin obtained his PhD from Cornell University in 1984. His research interests are in climatology, severe weather, and natural hazards. Recent work focuses on tornado hazards and risk of death, especially to persons in mobile homes and motor vehicles, improving tornado warnings, and how warnings are perceived and acted upon. Other recent research topics included severe winter weather and mountain climates.

Plus, JB and Bill talk to Felder Rushing, one of the foremost Southern gardeners, about rainfall and it’s effect on vegetation.

Our mail bag has been filling up, so Kevin runs through the incoming mail. Topics include such items as suing Al Gore for manmade global warming, satellite images for southern Europe, wind farms, hail, and other fascinating weather interests.

From The Weather Center:

WeatherBrains 101: It’s not strictly a summertime cloud type but it is a cloud type seen all across the country during the summer. Of course, we’re talking about cumulus clouds, so the professor opens the cloud book to take a peek at this particular one.

TWIWH: Bill Murray looks back at the week of July 21st. This week includes the first hurricane penetration done by Colonel Duckworth. And not just once but twice.

Listener SurveyListener Surveys: Okay, we continue to drive this topic into the ground, but we really do like to hear from you. Many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to fill out the Listener Survey.
