WeatherBrains 861: Eddy Dissipation Rate

WeatherBrains Episode 861 is now online (July 18th, 2022). If you are crazy about weather, this is THE podcast for you!

This week, we introduce our new full-time Panelist to the show.  He’s been Chief Meteorologist for FOX23 in Tulsa Oklahoma for over 12 years.  James Aydelott, welcome aboard!!!
Tonight’s Guest WeatherBrain is a guest suggestion.  He’s a professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Nebraska. He is also the director of TORUS (Targeted Observations by Radars and UAS of Supercells), where he quite literally flies in the face of storms, seeking the reasons some supercell thunderstorms generate tornadoes while others do not.  His project, a collaboration with the University of Colorado, NOAA and the University of Oklahoma, includes manned aircraft, fixed wing drones and on-the-ground instruments mounted in SUVs. His goal is to improve forecasting and increase public safety by reducing false alarms. He is in the midst of a research season, the first since COVID, where for the first time his group will provide real-time data to National Weather Service meteorologists for their forecasts.  He attended Texas A&M for his undergraduate studies and attended the University of Illinois for his phD.  Dr. Adam Houston, welcome to the show!
