WeatherBrains 107: Damage Surveys

WeatherBrains Episode 107 is now online (February 12, 2008). This is THE netcast audio program for people who absolutely love everything weather.

Damage from the EF4 in Hardin County TennesseeThe buzz this week centers on the historic February tornado outbreak of last week. A special feature of the show is a discussion with Weather Brains very own geek Brian Peters who is part of the Quick Response Team (QRT) which has responsibility for applying the Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF-Scale) to suspected EF4 and EF5 tornadoes. Brian was activated for tornadoes in Jackson and Lawrence counties Alabama and Hardin County Tennessee. He tells us he has a lot of experience but he saw things on these tornado surveys that he has never seen before.

Tim Simpson, WREG-TV But we don’t stop there! Tim Simpson, meteorologist with WREG-TV in Memphis, TN, is our special guest this week. Tim was on the air during the Super Tuesday tornado outbreak which included tornadoes that struck Memphis and Jackson in West Tennessee and talks about those events.

Mailbag: And our very own EMO, E-Mail Officer, reads from a sack full of mail.

From The Weather Center:

WeatherBrains 101: The Enhanced Fujita Scale is the topic for this week. The illustrious professor brings you information on what this scale is and why it is enhanced.

This Week In Weather History:

WeatherBrains 106: GW Advocate Chimes In

WeatherBrains Episode 106 is now online (February 5, 2008). This is THE netcast audio program for people who absolutely love everything weather.

Dan Satterfield, Weather Brains guestJoining us as our special guest tonight is Dan Satterfield from WHNT-TV in Huntsville, AL. Dan has been the Chief Meteorologist at WHNT since 1994. Dan recently produced a piece on the Arctic after his personal voyage there with emphasis on the impacts of climate change. Dan speaks openly about his support of manmade global warming and is one of the only ones who does to accept a Weather Brains invitation to join us on the show.

Rants: Of course, what would a Weather Brains episode be without at least one rant? The topic once again has to do with the complex wording of NWS forecasts.

Mailbag: And our very own EMO, Email Officer, returns with a sack full of mail to talk about.

From The Weather Center:

WeatherBrains 101: Groundhog day has come and gone, so did you see your shadow? How about a look at some extremes for winter weather across the United States – and perhaps even further for you really cold weather buffs?

This Week In Weather History: Did you know that shipping on the Great Lakes, wrecked by repeated storms, helped to establish a national weather service? Bill Murray prowls the record books for an interesting look at the early history of the establishment of the US Weather Bureau.

Listener SurveyListener Surveys: Okay, okay, we keep driving this topic into the ground, but we really do like to hear from you. And many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to fill out the Listener Survey. The survey just takes a minute or two, and it provides us with an opportunity to learn where you are and hear your thoughts and comments on the show. Click here to take the survey.
