WeatherBrains Episode 85 is now online (September 10, 2007). This is THE netcast audio program for people who love everything weather.

In this week’s Episode:

Join The Party, Be Average:  Continuing a rant from last week, we begin the change from normal to average.

Bill ProenzaThe “Proenza Effect”:  Bill Proenza, ousted Director of the National Hurricane Center, gets his new assignment from NOAA, and it is an old one.

Which Way The Weather Service:  There is no question that the men and women of the National Weather Service do a tremendous job and are a bargan at any price.  Sparked by the Bill Proenza assignment, we’ll talk about the future of NWS and wonder if politics will win out over performance.

Men In Black:  Not the movie, but Brian and Kevin are wondering if the Secret Service might be paying closer attention to them from now on.

From The Weather Center:

  • WB 101WeatherBrains 101: The sun is the driving force behind our weather, but how does all that heat move around? Professor Peters gets all hot under the collar as he tackles the transportation of heat via radiation, conduction, and convection in this latest discussion.
  • This Week In Weather History: Bill Murray remembers a big hurricane that sends James on a trip down memory lane.

Join James Spann, Kevin Selle, and Brian Peters for the latest look at the field of weather in the newest episode of WeatherBrains.

WeatherBrains 84: Felix Lashes Out

WeatherBrains Episode 84 is now online (September 3, 2007). This is THE netcast audio program for people who love weather.

In this week’s Episode:

Hurricane Hunter Aircraft (photo by Brian Peters)

Hurricane Hunters: We are still in the heart of hurricane season, and Hurricane Felix is the focus for this episode of Weather Brains. Felix is the focus, but the topic really centers on the Hurricane Hunters. These folks fly missions into and through hurricanes including monsters like Category Five Felix collecting critical data for forecasters, and sometimes things do not go well. Such was the case with a mission of N42RF that was literally tossed around by Felix. Join the Weather Brains crew for a discussion of this particular flight.

From The Weather Center:

  • TUTT Diagram from Fitzpatrick, 1995
WeatherBrains 101: TUTT. Are we digging into archaeology or what? Nope, this has nothing to do with that famous find in Egypt by Howard Carter back in the 1930. This is a meteorological acronym that refers to the Tropical Upper Tropspheric Trough which is a fairly common feature about which not a great deal is currently known. But we’ll still take a stab at an explanation of TUTT since we are into the heart of hurricane season.
  • This Week In Weather History: It’s known as the worst disaster in American history. And Bill Murray looks back at the Galveston Hurricane that occurred this week in 1900.

Websites From This Episode:

Kevin Selle poses the question to the Weather Brains crew, “What if you could only have two weather websites?”  Here are some top picks from the WeatherBrains gang:

National Center for Environmental Prediction

College of Dupage

WeatherTap

University of Michigan

Storm Prediction Center

Gibson Ridge Radar
